2.4: Introduction

IntroductionIntroduction The start of a research article providing background information and an overview of the research presented in the article.

If you completed Course 2, Lesson 3: LISLibrary and Information Science An interdisciplinary field that examines how physical and digital information is organized, accessed, collected, managed, disseminated and used, particularly in library settings. Research Methodologies and Methods, you learned about a wide range of methods you could use to conduct your research. But how do you know which methods are right for your project? In this lesson, we’ll walk through a strategy for exploring methodologies based on the types of research outcomes and claims you expect to make based on your research. This is not to say that you go into your research project with an answer to your questions already predetermined but that you have an idea of the form an answer might take. Much like a learning outcome can be used to develop a course or training content and plans for assessment, envisioning the types of outcome for your work can form the basis for the many decisions you’ll need to make as a researcher, from the choice of methodologyMethodology The theoretical framework that informs how a researcher approaches their work and what methods are used to collect data. to the venues in which you’ll share your work. In addition to considering the form of research outcome, you’ll also want to consider the communities in which you’ll conduct your research and share your scholarship and assess what tools and technologies you’ll need to conduct your work.

This lesson concludes with a worksheet that you can use to identify up to three potential methodologies for your own research topic.
