6.1.2: Looking Ahead To What’s Next

Looking Ahead To What’s Next

Whether you’ve navigated through the entire curriculum or you’ve taken some of the individual courses or lessons in this program, this section will help you plan ahead for what’s next. Maybe you are an MLIS grad student getting ready to enter the field, an early-career librarian in your first job, or you’re already established in your career but looking to pursue your own research project for the first time or change directions in your research.

Think about the work you’ve done with LPOL so far and where you are right now in your research journey. Then, reflect on the following questions:

  1. What do you want to do next with your research project?
  2. When would you like to see this happen?
  3. How do you hope to contribute to scholarly conversation in LISLibrary and Information Science An interdisciplinary field that examines how physical and digital information is organized, accessed, collected, managed, disseminated and used, particularly in library settings.?
  4. What would you still like to learn?
  5. What other experiences or resources do you need to obtain in order to move forward?
  6. What parts of planning ahead feel the most challenging for you right now?
  7. What kind of support will you need to face those challenges?
  8. Who are the people in your personal or professional community who you might collaborate with or who can help support you as a mentor?
  9. What kind of advice do you need to receive right now?

Now let’s use your answers to these questions as the building blocks for your plan. Fill in your answers accordingly:

My next step for my research is (1). I will achieve this by (2). This will help me contribute to the scholarly conversation in LIS by (3). In order to do this, I will learn how to (4). I will obtain (5.) in order to help move my research forward. Because I feel like (6.) will be challenging, I will seek out (7.) in order to get the support I need. (8.) will help guide me with (9.) so that I may achieve (1.)

Now that you’ve plotted it out, how does your plan look? How will you build in rest periods to avoid burnout along the way?

We hope LPOL has helped you feel prepared to start your journey as a researcher, pursue your research interests, and work on scholarship that gets published to improve the literature and the LIS field. We can’t wait to see what you do next!

Next, we provide an evaluation form for you to share feedback on your experience with LPOL.
